About the Organization

The International Programs Center of the US Census Bureau provides tools, training and technical assistance to countries around the world. For over 60 years, the Census Bureau has performed international analytical work and assisted in the collection, processing, analysis, dissemination, and use of statistics with counterpart governments in over 100 countries. Some of our recent projects include providing assistance to Nepal, Jordan, Namibia, Egypt and Mozambique. We also develop free software tools for data processing and analysis used worldwide including a new Android application for electronic data collection.

The work environment is casual with flexible hours and telework. We are a small but dedicated team who enjoys working with people from countries from all over the world. We telecommute two days a week.

Duties

We are seeking a software engineer/international technical advisor to be based in our offices outside Washington DC who can help us develop computer software and provide assistance to other countries with their statistical programs. Job duties include developing and testing software tools as well as providing assistance to governmental and non-governmental organizations in developing countries on census and survey data processing, data collection and data dissemination.

There will be opportunities for international travel for those who are interested, although this is not a requirement for the job.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a degree in computer science or a related field plus experience with one or more of the following programming languages: C++, Java, C#, PHP, Javascript. Experience developing mobile applications, particulary Android, is a plus.

Experience living overseas and ability to speak a foreign language (French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Arabic especially) would be ideal.

Knowledge of statistics and/or demography is a plus but not required.
